
2 Days 1 Night in Gyeongju
You’re coming to South Korea for more than a week and want to explore outside of Seoul? Then you should definitely consider Gyeongju. Located south east of Korea in the North Gyeongsang Province, Gyeongju makes the perfect destination for a 2 days 1 night trip. To get there the two main options are the train which is a 2h30min ride from Seoul or the bus which is a 3h30min from Seoul. If you wish to get to Gyeongju from Busan then it will only be a 30min ride by train or a 1h ride by bus.
Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla and is nicknamed “the museum without walls”.
What to see in Gyeongju?
Bulguksa Temple
Bulguksa Temple is a stunning example of ancient Korean architecture and Buddhist art. Built during the Silla Dynasty in the 8th century, it is renowned for its intricate stone pagodas, and ornate wooden halls. The temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its harmonious blend of natural beauty and spiritual tranquility, offering a glimpse into Korea’s rich cultural and religious heritage.

Seokguram Grotto
Seokguram Grotto, nestled on Tohamsan Mountain, is a remarkable Buddhist cave temple dating back to the 8th century like Bulguksa Temple. This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its intricately carved stone Buddha statue, surrounded by detailed reliefs of bodhisattvas, guardians, and celestial beings. The grotto’s serene atmosphere and masterful craftsmanship highlight the spiritual and artistic achievements of the Silla Dynasty, offering a profound glimpse into Korea’s ancient Buddhist tradition.
Ps: You cannot take pictures or record the statue of Buddha inside the cave which is why we don’t have photos of it.

Woljeong Bridge
Woljeong Bridge, also known as Woljeonggyo Bridge (’gyo’ meaning bridge in Korean), is the longgest wooden bridge in South Korea spanning the Nam River in Gyeongju. Originally constructed during the Silla Dynasty in the 8th century, it was destroyed at some point in time. For years, the bridge was being rebuilt until it was finally achieved in April 2018, thanks to years of thorough research and hard work. Woljeonggyo Bridge’s elegant design and vibrant reflections on the water are especially breathtaking at night, you have to see it for yourself!

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond
Donggung Palace was a royal residence for one of the prince of the Silla Dynasty, and also a place were banquets were held during auspicious events. This palace showcases the grandeur of ancient Korean architecture, while Wolji Pond, also known as Anapji Pond, is renowned for its tranquil waters and beautifully restored pavilions. Together, they offer a picturesque glimpse into the opulence and elegance of Korea’s ancient royal court, surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens and reflective water features that enhance their serene beauty.

Cheomseongdae Observatory
Cheomseongdae Observatory, is said to be the oldest surviving astronomical observatories in East Asia, dating back to the 7th century during the Silla Dynasty. This unique cylindrical structure, built from 362 stones, stands at about 9.4 meters tall and is believed to have been used for stargazing and celestial observations. Its elegant and simple design, combined with its historical significance, makes it a fascinating testament to the advanced scientific and architectural skills of ancient Korea.

Daereungwon Tomb Complex (+ Cheonmachong)
Daereungwon Tomb Complex is an large archaeological site featuring a collection of ancient royal tombs from the Silla Dynasty, including the famous Cheonmachong Tomb. Cheonmachong, one of the most well-preserved tombs, is renowned for its lavish burial artifacts and exquisite murals that provide insight into the opulent funerary practices and artistic achievements of the era.

Gyochon Traditional Village
