Your Essential Guide to Subway-Hopping Around Seoul

Seoul is beloved by travelers around the world for many reasons and one of it is how easily accessible the city is thanks to its well-developed public transportation system that connects Seoul to other major cities including Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon. With over 10 lines, it can be confusing at times… But fret not, that’s what this post is all about! 😁

Here are our top 3 useful tips for your next free-and-easy trip to Korea!

1. Save money & time with transportation cards

While you can always buy a single-journey ticket using cash, it’s cumulatively cheaper and simply more convenient to use a transportation card to get around Seoul. There is a wide range of transportation cards available and to save you from the trouble, here are our pick for the most value-for-money option!

Tmoney Card

One of the many benefits of using Tmoney card is that concession discounts are available! To put simply, if you’re transferring from one bus to another, one subway line to another, or from bus to subway or vice versa within 30 minutes, you don’t have to pay extra fee! Plus they come in unbelievably cute designs!

2. A city that is so foreigner-friendly that knowing Korean is not essential

While the mere thought of taking public transportation with zero knowledge of Korean language can sound intimidating, there’s really nothing to worry about! Not only that station names are available in Chinese & English, different colours and numbers are also used to indicate respective station lines so even for travelers, it is rather easy to get your way around!

The station names can be tricky sometimes especially when it is a literal translation from the native language, which is why each station is assigned with a unique number you don’t have to worry about getting confused!

Now, instead of Hongik University and Myeong-Dong, we can now say: “Let’s take the subway from 239 to 424!” 😆

3. DIY your subway-themed tour according to your travel preference

Fans of K-pop? Shopaholic? History buff? An epicurean with an adventurous heart for exotic cuisine? All of the above? Well, not a problem with Seoul’s subway system! Furthermore, given how easy it is to find detailed subway-themed tour itinerary online, you wouldn’t need to worry about planning your trip at all! 🤗

Here’s one along subway line 3 that we think just might be the one you’ve been waiting to experience, especially if you’re a fan of the hit drama, “Hotel del Luna”!

Fans of Hotel De Luna will not be surprised by this little interesting titbit but the iconic hotel is actually shot in a cafe that sits in the trendy Ikseon-dong area in Seoul, going by the name “Hotel Seine”! The interior design concept is said to be inspired by the critically acclaimed film “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, where the director’s brilliantly unique artistic vision was brought to life through every single detail from flooring, furniture, paintings to smallest mise-en-place.

Indulge in more of its exquisite beauty via Hotel Seine Cafe’s instagram, or even better, check it out yourself by paying them a visit!

Remember that scene where Man-wol (played by IU) & Ku Chan-seong (played by Yeo Jin Goo) arrived at the red bean porridge restaurant which Man-wol come to know through the show she always watched, “The Guys Who Died After Eating”? Well the actual shop interestingly does not sell red bean porridge, instead, this popular bakery serves some of the tastiest desserts including sweet and sour five-flavor berry mousse and the nutty and moist fig tart. 🤤

It’s so hard to say no to desserts, don’t you think so?
