Sokcho Abai Town (Abai Village)

Abai Village is made by refugees of the Korean War, who came to the south side of Korea and never returned home. As time passed by, people from other areas have settled down too, but around 60% of residents are still from the Hamgyeong Province. Today the city’s official name is called “Cheongho-dong,” but people still call it “Abai Village,” which means “grandfather” in the Hamgyeong dialect. Abai Village is also famous for its Kdrama shooting places, the popular Korean drama ‘Autumn in my Heart,” was shot here. And its famous Gaetbae is still operating to attract Japanese and Taiwanese tourists. Recently, it gained more popularity and attracting more visitors due to the filming of the popular television show, “2 days and 1 night.”

Squid Sundae

Take out the insides of a squid, wash it and stuff it with sticky rice, radish leaves, carrot, onion, and sesame leaf, then steam the whole thing – you have to try this delicacy called squid Sundae in Sokcho! Since Sokcho has the freshest squid and it’s the taste of squid that is the key of a great taste you have to taste the real deal here. Squid Sundae is chewy, delicious and also nutritional making it a great dish for a meal.

Abai Sundae

Refugees from Hamgyeong Province in the Korean War settled down in Cheongho-dong of Sokcho, namely Abai Village. A must-have dish in Abai Village is Abai Sundae, which is a renowned food of Hamgyeong Province. This mixture of sticky rice, pig blood, cooked sprouts, and various vegetables are seasoned with various seasonings including garlic and ginger. Stuff the mixture into the intestines of a pig, then steam it to make “Sundae”. Compared to the cities this Sundae is huge! As soon as you put it in the mouth, its unique scent will fill your mouth and as you start to chew it, its soft, sticky and deep taste will fascinate you. Abai Sundae also goes great with “flatfish Sikhae”.

Seaside Garden

A nice cafe located right in front of the sea, here you can take a rest and relax with a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery.

Great job! Even though it was crowded & lots of traffic, the guide did a good job of adjusting our schedule to fit everything in. Squid sundae is unique. Lavendar farm was fragrant & beautiful.
