Every June the areas in Goseong are covered with lavender flowers which paints the villages and farms in pretty violet color. The Goseong Lavender Festival starts from June 10 to 23rd. Come see the beautiful Hani Lavender Farm, where the 12th Lavender Festival will be held. There are various programs and fun events offered for example making lavender pizza, a harvest experience, children’s drawing contest, photo contest, etc…
Don’t miss this Lavender Festival where you can feel an exotic scenery in Korea! On top of that, you will also be able to see some cool places around Sokcho area!
Abai Village is made by refugees of the Korean War, who came to the south side of Korea and never returned home. As time passed by, people from other areas have settled down too, but around 60% of residents are still from the Hamgyeong Province. Today the city’s oﬃcial name is called “Cheongho-dong,” but people still call it “Abai Village,” which means “grandfather” in the Hamgyeong dialect. Abai Village is also famous for its Kdrama shooting places, the popular Korean drama ‘Autumn in my Heart,” was shot here. And its famous Gaetbae is still operating to attract Japanese and Taiwanese tourists. Recently, it gained more popularity and attracting more visitors due to the filming of the popular television show, “2 days and 1 night.”
Take out the insides of a squid, wash it and stuﬀ it with sticky rice, radish leaves, carrot, onion, and sesame leaf, then steam the whole thing – you have to try this delicacy called squid Sundae in Sokcho! Since Sokcho has the freshest squid and it’s the taste of squid that is the key of a great taste you have to taste the real deal here. Squid Sundae is chewy, delicious and also nutritional making it a great dish for a meal.
Refugees from Hamgyeong Province in the Korean War settled down in Cheongho-dong of Sokcho, namely Abai Village. A must-have dish in Abai Village is Abai Sundae, which is a renowned food of Hamgyeong Province. This mixture of sticky rice, pig blood, cooked sprouts, and various vegetables are seasoned with various seasonings including garlic and ginger. Stuﬀ the mixture into the intestines of a pig, then steam it to make “Sundae”. Compared to the cities this Sundae is huge! As soon as you put it in the mouth, its unique scent will ﬁll your mouth and as you start to chew it, its soft, sticky and deep taste will fascinate you. Abai Sundae also goes great with “flatfish Sikhae”.
A nice cafe located right in front of the sea, here you can take a rest and relax with a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery.
