Overview

Walking on the Jindo Mysterious Sea Route

Jindo Island in Jeollanam Province is the third largest island in Korea, beside Jejudo and Geojedo Island. Once a year on this island, the sea water mysteriously splits and people can walk through the sea from the main island to a smaller island nearby. This phenomenon happens due to the deposition of pebbles and sand produced over time with the tide, forming a 40-60 meter wide, 2.8-kilometer-long road that emerges at extreme low-tide. The event is considered the Korean version of Moses’ miracle, as it resembles a passage in the Old Testament in the Book of Exodus. The water will remain parting for about one hour before going back to normal condition.

The Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival takes place at the same time as this phenomenon. Visitors will enjoy walking along the sea path, collecting abalone and other enjoyable activities that make up the program of the festival. The sea parting’s stunning sight is widely known by so many Korean people as well as international visitors that every year, about half a million people flock from around the world just to see this amazing event.
