Sokcho Area – Best of Nature 1-Day Tour

Mt. Seorak

Mt. Seorak is the highest mountain in Gangwon-do Province and the third highest in South Korea, following Mt. Halla in Jeju and Mt. Jiri in the south. Located within a stunning national park near Sokcho City, its Daechongbong Peak (대청봉) rises to an impressive 1,708 meters (5,603 feet).

This national park is a year-round tourist hotspot, but autumn is undoubtedly the best season to visit. The mountain transforms into a breathtaking landscape of vibrant autumn foliage, making it one of Korea’s most beautiful fall destinations.

Among the top highlights of Mt. Seorak are the scenic cable car ride, the historic Sinheungsa Temple (신흥사), and the iconic Great Bronze Buddha statue. These attractions offer a perfect blend of nature, culture, and history.

Naksansa temple

Naksansa is a historic Korean Buddhist temple founded by Ui-Sang, an ambassador during the reign of the 30th King of the Silla Period (57 BC – 935 AD). The temple is home to several cultural treasures, including the Seven-Story Stone Tower, Dongjong (Bronze Bell Pavilion), and Hongyaemun Gate. Notably, Naksansa is one of the few temples in Korea that offers a breathtaking view of the East Sea.

At the summit of Mount Naksan, visitors will find the Haesugwaneumsang (Bodhisattva of Mercy) statue, a revered Buddhist figure often depicted as a goddess. The statue stands 15 meters (49 feet) tall on a 2.8-meter (9.2-foot) high pedestal, gazing peacefully out to sea with eyes and fingers closed in deep meditation. Carved from white granite, it creates a serene and awe-inspiring presence at the temple’s highest point.

Over time, what started as a personal retreat gained popularity through word of mouth, leading the owner to open it to the public for free in 2010 generously.
