Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival is one of Korea’s prime summer festivals and celebrates the local specialty product of sweetfish. The sweetfish from Bonghwa are known to have been given as tribute to the king during the Joseon dynasty. The highest-quality sweetfish come from the upstream sections of the Nakdonggang and Seomjingang Rivers, where Bonghwa-gun is located.
Traditionally, sweetfish festivals feature various activities and attractions related to the fish, such as fishing competitions, culinary experiences, cultural performances, and entertainment. Visitors might have the opportunity to catch sweetfish, sample delicious sweetfish dishes, learn about the local fishing culture, and enjoy live music and dance performances.
