K-Trend, Tradition and Modernity
What part of Korea do you love?
I am sure that many of you would say K-pop and also Korean drama. With that in mind do you guys notice the unique Korean elements in it?
For example, BTS SUGA Daechwita Music Video. Let’s try to find all the Korean elements in BTS SUGA’s Daechwita Music Video. The first second of the video already screams Korea! From the music video set, clothing, and song.
One of the most unique Korean elements in BTS SUGA Daechwita Music Video is the song, a fusion “Joseon Pop“. According to BTS SUGA, he wanted to sample music that is played during a King ceremonial walk and ended up sampling the sound from the real ‘Daechwita’. In short, Daechwita is known to be the Korean style of traditional military band music.
This kind of fusion song, mixing in traditional music has been very popular among the Koreans, many calling it “Joseon Pop” (referring to the last Korean kingdom in 1897) or calling it “K-HIP” (Hip meaning like the latest trend). Like the “Feel the Rhythm of KOREA: SEOUL” Video which has garnered 46.5 Million views. The video is a modern take on traditional pansori (a Korean genre of musical storytelling).
As seen in the video their clothing also has a hint of Korean elements. The dance member Lee Hye-sang and Kim Bo-ram designed it! A modern and comfortable Hanbok-style outfit. They have created many Modern Hanbok throughout the “Feel the Rhythm of KOREA” music video series. Be sure to check them out!
Besides that we also see BTS SUGA wearing Hanbok in the music video. Modern Hanbok has been a popular choice of many K-pop celebrities like BLACKPINK, VIXX, OH MY GIRL, etc. Not only among Korean celebrities but in our daily life in Korea!
The Modern Hanbok has been designed to fit into daily lives where you can wear it for an official outing or just as an everyday casual outfit. Brands like Happly, Danha, and Leesle have designed Modern Hanbok for daily wears while incorporating Korean elements.
There are many other Korean tradition-inspired items that have been popular here in Korea. Since last year the National Museum of Korea has been creating Korean antiques-inspired merchandise. One of them is the Goryeo celadon-inspired smartphone cases and AirPods cases!
Just within the first week of release, 10,000 products were sold!
